behind the mask: the rise of leslie vernon (2006)
In a small Oregon town, Leslie Vernon becomes the subject of a documentary that follows his daily routine as he prepares to become the next famous serial killer.Vernon reveals to the journalist, Taylor Gentry, that he aspires to be like his slasher film idols. What is unique about Vernon is that he does not posses any supernatural powers, proving that he has to work extra hard to avoid not getting killed when he is stalking his victims. Both Gentry and her cameraman follow Vernon as he prepares for his killing spree but plead with him to avoid his plans. At this point the movie shifts from a documetnary, to a traditional slasher genre that captures Vernon on his killing spree, culling the young victims until Gentry becomes the classic final girl.
Scott Glosserman's film is an homage to the slasher genre with various horror film references throughout, including the appearance of iconic horror actors including Robert Englund (A Nightmare on Elm Street), Zelda Rubinstein (Poltergeist) and Kane Hodder (Friday the 13th Part VIII). The film's narrative also takes place within the diegesis of the horror film world, allowing these icons to exist in real life. The film is situated as a mockumentary, even though the film shifts from documentary to traditional slasher film. Like Scream (1996), Behind the Mask parodies numerous horror tropes, becoming a self-referential piece, blending elements of comedy and horror with documentary and fiction. The film's unique narrative approach earned accolades and awards from various festivals including the Toronto After Dark Film Festival and Fantasia Film Festival in 2006. Before the Mask, a prequel to the film is currently being developed.
