Friday the 13th (1980)
Idyllic Camp Crystal Lake is about to re-open years after several camp counsellors were murdered. The locals refer to it as Camp Blood. While working to fix up the camp several teenager counsellors frolic, swim and enjoy the summer weather, all under the watchful of a stalker from the woods. That night during a rainstorm one by one the teenagers are stalked and murdered in gruesome and violent ways. The last counselor, Alice, comes face to face with the killer. Mrs. Voorhees, whose son Jason drowned while at Camp Crystal Lake years before. Never having got over his death, she blames the camp counsellors for not watching her son. Alice manages to strike down and kill Mrs. Voorhees, but the ending suggests that the murders will continue.
Along with Halloween, Friday the 13th went on to become of the most profitable slasher films in history. The film was unique in its musical score in that only when the killer was present was there any kind of music played. A little known fact is that the infamous haunting score "ki ki ki ma ma ma" actually stands for "kill her mommy" which Mrs. Voorhees channels in her dead son's boyish voice when chasing Alice, the lone survivor. The film was berated by critics for thinking that the audience would root for the killer through the point of view camerawork.
