the texas chainsaw massacre (2003)
Remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
Directed by Marcus Nispel and produced by Michael Bay, the film is a remake of Tobe Hooper's classic horror slasher. The plot, which is loosely based on the murders of Ed Gein, finds five teenagers who witness the suicide of a hitchhiker they picked up. While trying to collect themselves and search for help, they stumble down the wrong path only to meet their demise at the hands (or chainsaw) of Leatherface.
Like many other remakes of classic horror films, the critical reception was generally negative with reviewers questioning the relevance of such a revival. Despite the negative press, audiences flocked to the theatres pushing the film's worldwide gross to over $100 million from a budget of $9.5 million. The film's success paved the way for other horror remakes such as The Amityville Horror (2005) and a prequel The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2005). Although the prequel was not a financial success, the franchise continued to expand, with the most recent release of the 7th film in the series Texas Chainsaw 3D (2013).
