rec (2007)
When a television reporter and her cameraman spend one evening following firemen from a local Barcelona station, they never anticipated that the site of a routine call at an apartment building would set the stage for an evening of non-stop terror. Upon entering the building the first responders face an agressive woman who bites and kills a first responder, forcing a barricade around the building sealing the occupants inside. It is soon revealed that those who are bitten transform into agressive and violent zombies with a thirst for blood. As the number of infected continue to rise in the sealed apartment, the reporter and cameraman continue to record their plight in an efforts to stay alive.
The award-winning Spanish horror film earned positive reviews upon its release in Europe, but was not made available in the United States until after the American remake Quarentine (2008) had finished its theatrical run. What is interesting to note is the speed of the film which often never lets up, a creative device that holds the attention of the audience throughout its lean 78 minute runtime. With a similar ending to that of the Blair Witch, Rec situates the found footage aesthetic and adapts it to an audience that is becoming familiar with the tropes and successfully manages to scare audiences. The film also released two sequels: Rec 2 (2009) and Rec 3: Genesis (2012) with a forth film planned to end the franchise.
