The blair witch project (1999)
The plot of this seminal found footage film was written on its posters and appears in the opening frames of the film which read: In October of 1994, three student filmmakers disappeared in the woods near Burketsville, Maryland while shooting a documentary...a year later their footage was found.
Heather, Mike and Josh set out to make a documentary about the Blair Witch, a spirit that is believed to haunt the nearby woods. After successfully shooting in the town, the trio head into the woods and discover odd collections of rocks and twigs in various ritualistic patterns. The team soon discover that they are not alone, but are being stalked by a spirit that gets more agressive each evening. The filmmakers become lost and are unable to escape the haunted woods, becoming greater targets for the Blair Witch with each passing night. As is stating in the prologue, the filmmakers are unable to escape the woods alive.
The film is regarded as being one of the most profitable films of all time earning $140 million on a $60,000 budget. Its popularity can be greatly attributed to the successful online marketing campaign that presented the film as a documentary. The official website includes photographic evidence of the crime scene, interviews with the parents, and police reports. Three weeks prior to the theatrical release, a fictional documentary "Curse of the Blair Witch" aired on the Sci-Fi channel, presenting the case as being real leading many audiences to believe the hype when they entered the theatre. While the film's sequel Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 (2000) failed at the box office, the introduction of found footage films to the mass audience had been established.
