piranha 3D (2010)
Remake of Piranha (1978)
When an earthquake ruptures the base of Lake Victoria, swarms of prehistoric piranhas are suddenly unleashed on the unsuspecting spring breakers. The original Corman produced and Dante directed film was a parody of Jaws (1975), and the remake never loses sight of this. From the poster (at left) to the plot of a popular beach destination not wanting to close for the tourist season, the original and the remake closely resemble Hollywood's favorite great white shark tale. However, the remake breaks away from the plot in the original which featured the fierce piranhas as a military experiment and not prehistoric creatures laying dormant. While the plot differed, the campy flavour did not. Those who praised the film recognized the blend of horror and comedy, noting that the film never tries to take itself too seriously. The remake maintained the B-movie-ness of the original.
The film was directed by Alexandre Aja who had been making a steady stream of horror remakes since 2006. While the film was theatrically released in 3D, Aja shot the film in 2D for production purposes. The film earned over $83 million in its worldwide theatrical release, making it a financial successful remake. The following film Piranha 3DD (2012) earned just over a $350,000 in its North American theatrical release, ending the thought of a franchise (for now).
