let me in (2010)
Remake of Let the Right One In (2008)
Set in Los Almos, New Mexico a 12-year old boy who is bullied at school and neglected at home befriends a neighbourhood girl who seems to only be able to meet in the evening. The two form an unlikely friendship, especially when it is revealed that she is a vampire. The film successfully blends the genre of horror, romance, and drama into an evocative tale of isolation, acceptance, young (and eternal love) and friendship.
Hammar Films acquired the rights to remake shortly after the original had premiered. American filmmaker Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) became attached to the project when its original director, Tomas Alfredson, declined the offer (Alfredson criticized the idea of a remake). The remake was designed to closely reflect the original but to cater to a wide audience (i.e. English and more violence). The film premiered at TIFF on September 13, 2010 and opened wide on October 1st to strong critical reviews. The performances by the young leads (Kodi-Smit-McPhee and Chloe Grace Moretz) along with Reeves exectuion of blending various genres were noted for elevating this film from traditional horror fare. However, the film only earned $12 million, becoming one of the lowest grossing Hollywood films of 2010.
