cloverfield (2007)
The film begins with a surprise party that has been thrown for Rob, the film's protagonists, who is leaving New York to begin a career in Japan. The festivities are interrupted by what at first is thought to be an earthquake, but is soon revealed to be a large monster terrorizing Manhattan. As the city begins to attack the beast and evacuate the city, Rob and his friends take to the streets with their camera in hand. News reports provide updates on the efforts to repel the beast, that seems to be releasing large parasites that spread through the streets. As characters die, nearby friends pick up the video camera and continue recording. Air raid sirens are heard as large scale bombing raids begin, collapsing buildings onto our protagonists, leaving only the video camera as evidence of their plight.
The film begins with a disclaimer that the United States Department of Defence seized this video, framing the following film as de-classified evidence of a large scale attack. The film is entirely comprised of found footage recorded on Rob's camera. The authenticity of the found footage is achieved in part by occasionally cutting to older video that Rob had recorded over. The marketing campaign for this blockbuster is interesting to note as the title was not revealed until three months after the teaser trailer. The film was simply advertised as 1-18-08, a risky move for a Hollywood film without any recognizable cast or crew, aside from producer J.J. Abrams. By not revealing the title or much about the plot, the online community bustled with excitement as online communities began speculating the film's plot. The film was received well by both critics and the box office earning over $170 million worldwide.
