White Zombie (1932)
A young couple visiting Haiti are hosted by an acquaintance they met on the voyage. Monsieur Beaumont has his eye on the beautiful Madeleine and will do anything to win her over, even if it means turning her into a zombie. He enlists the help of his mill manager Legendre (played by Bela Lugosi) who runs the mill with people he has can easily control having turned them into passive worker zombies. After she is turned, Beaumont realizes that the mindless zombie Madeleine is no longer the woman he fell in love with and requests to have her changed back to her vivacious self. Legendre refuses and instead turns Beaumont into a zombie. Having not given up on his true love, Madeleine's beau Neil returns to save her anyway he can.
Credited as being the first zombie movie ever, White Zombie is a good example of how far the zombie has come in the history of film but certainly not what fans of the genre are used to today.
