troll hunter (2010)
A group of Norwegian students enter the forest to confront and expose, a suspected illegal bear poacher, Hans. However, the group discovers that it is not bears that Hans is interested in capturing, but large trolls that inhabit the area. Hans and the students team up to document the trollhunting in progress. With video cameras in hand and large weapons that flash light that turns the trolls to stone, the group tries to bait and trap these large creatures. Throughout the film, the characters perish, leaving others to pick up the camera and continue to record. Much of the footage is soon confiscated by the government, while some of it get salvaged by a passerby on the highway. The film ends with a title stating that none of the students have been heard of again after these incidents.
The film was released theatrically on October 29, 2010 in Norway and received a limited release and appeared on the festival circuit throughout 2011 in North America. Like many found footage films, it is designed from a point-of-view perspective, maintaining its reflexive style and is often regarded as a mockumentary in that it features quite a bit of humor along with the horror. Some critics have also noted the malaise in the found footage trope of a documentary crew going out, not returning with only the footage remaining. However, the blend of realistic visual effect and humor position Trollhunter as a unique film in the found footage canon.
