the thing (1980)
Remake of The Thing from Another World (1951)
The plot revolves around a research team in Antarctica that discovers an alien organism that is capable of mutating and replicating the human form. The scientists quickly discover that the alien is more difficult to exterminate than expected. As the death toll rises, chances of escape and survival for the research team become less likely.
Carpenter's film was hailed for its elaborate state-of-the-art special effects and striking cinematography, but also criticized by some for the film's excessive gore. The film was scored by Ennio Morricone, which was uncharacteristic of Carpenter who would often score his own films. With a budget of $15 million, the film earned just under $20 million. Carpenter attributed the poor box office performance due to the competition the film faced opening on June 25, 1982, the same day as Blade Runner and two weeks after the 'kid friendly' alien of E.T. Regarded as a more terrifying tale than the original, the film earned the respect from critics and fans over the years topping many 'best-of' horror lists and has earned a strong life in the home video market.
The Thing was once again remade with the same title in 2011, earning only $17 million, half of its production budget.
