the omen (1976)
When the son of the American ambassador, Robert Thorn, (played by Gregory Peck) dies shortly after childbirth, the grieving father accepts the proposition form a priest to adopt the child whose mother died during labour. The parents name their son Damien. On Damien's fifth birthday, their nanny publicly hangs herself in front of the party guests causing a great stir for the ambassador's family. After hiring a new nanny with a mysterious past, the Thorn's are visited by a priest who reveals the true origins of Damien, claiming that he is the devil himself. Meanwhile an investigative reporter assists Robert in uncovering the truth by going through Damein's records. When it becomes clear to Robert that his son is the devil, he learns about the procedure of killing Satan and returns home to end the terror once and for all. However, the new nanny vows to protect the demon child, at whatever the cost.
The Omen launched Richard Donner's feature film career earning over $60 million on a budget of $2.8 million. Released in a similar fashion to Jaws (1975), the studio spent over $2.5 million in advertising and sneak previews generating positive word of mouth and audience anticipation. Winning an Oscar for best original score, the film would be regarded as one of the best reviewed films of 1976 and considered a quintessential occult horror film. The remake in 2006 was not well received, criticized for copying rather than remaking the film.
