The Evil Dead (1981)
Five university friends decided to spend their Spring Break in an cabin in the woods. Inside, they discover a mysterious book titled 'Book of the Dead' along with a tape recorder. When the tape is played, demons are released. One of the students, Cheryl runs outside only to be attacked by possessed trees. When she returns, no one believes her story. Cheryl soon becomes possessed and is confined in the cellar. However, the other women become possessed as well. The men fail in their attempt to find a road out of the woods, as the cursed trees impede any exit. With his friends all cursed and little chance of getting out alive, Ash (played by Bruce Campell) resorts to decapitation, burning, and close combat in order to escape death.
Sam Raimi was only 20 years old when he made The Evil Dead. With a cast and crew mainly comprised of friends and family, the production called for some creative ideas on the limited budget and talent available, mounting the camera on wooden platforms or bikes as a substitute for a dolly. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival 1982, where Stephen King was in attendance and gave it a rave review, helping the film's marketability domestically and abroad. The film benefited from a word-of-mouth campaign, because of its original X-rating, limited it commercial saturation. The Evil Dead was considered to be one of the most violent films of its time, sharing the title with I Spit on Your Grave (1978) and Cannibal Holocaust (1980). The Evil Dead continues to be a pinnacle cult horror film, even 30 years after its release.
The film was followed by two sequels directed by Raimi, Evil Dead 2 (1987) and Army of Darkness (1992), with a remake produced by Raimi and Bruce Campbell of the same name released April 5, 2013.
