the bay (2012)
When a small community in Chesapeake Bay tests positive for high levels of toxicity in the water, government officials decide to ignore the problem, to profit from the July 4th tourist season. The contaminated water becomes a breeding ground for deadly parasites that quickly latch onto humans as hosts and eventually killing the bodies. The narrative unfolds from a variety of characters and digital devices establishing many perspectives on this horrifying event in 2009.
The film is notable for having a veteran Hollywood filmmaker, Barry Levinson try his hand at the found footage horror genre. Keeping with traditional found footage tropes (low budget, unknown cast, short shooting schedule), Levinson added various narratives to the story, breaking from the traditional one camera perspective. The events of the film are recorded from various characters at different locations, with a variety of digital devices including phones, video cameras, webcams and surveillance cameras. In this regard, the film explores another way narrative that found footage films can explore. The film had a limited release and opened to mediocre reviews.
