Suspiria (1977)
American Suzy Banyon arrives in Freiburg Germany to begin her training at the prestigious ballet school. That same night, an expelled student from the school and her best friend are gruesomely murdered by a mysterious force. Suzy's training begins the following day, but the school's strict rules of where she stays and what she must consume (one glass of wine per day) leaves the student feeling uneasy. Strange occurrences such as maggots pouring from the ceiling and ominous sounds within the school, while Suzy repeatedly becomes drowsy, most likely from an additive in the wine. After the death of Suzy's close friend, the suspicious student learns that the school is being run by a coven of witches that are plotting to end Suzy's life as well.
One of Argento's most profitable films is also recognized for being one of his most visually striking. Infamous for its opening featuring the gory death of two students, the film has been regarded as a sensory overload with its lush colours scheme, loud rock score composed by the Goblins, and dynamic camera positioning. This film has been regarded as an example of 'grandiose giallo' for its use of exaggerated colours and extreme violence. Suspiria is the first film in Argento's 'Three Mothers' series with Inferno (1980) and The Mother of Tears (2007) comprising the trilogy. While the narrative might not hold up as much today, the lush visual style keeps audience both entertained and horrified, making it an important milestone in occult cinema.
