rosemary's baby (1968)
When Rosemary and Guy Woodhouse move into their New York City apartment, they befriend Minnie and Roman Castevet, the elderly and eccentric neighbours. When Guy and Rosemary decide that they will start trying to have a baby, the neighbours celebrate with a chocolatey dessert. After a few bites, Rosemary passes out and dreams that she is being raped by a demonic figure. Rosemary becomes pregnant and appears gaunt and weak, citing various pains that the Castevet family physician tells her not to worry about. One of Rosemary's concerned friends tries to solve what could be her health complications, only to fall into a coma and die. Rosemary quickly realizes that her neighbours are indeed devil worshipers. With Guy as an accomplice, the Castevet's plan on using Rosemary's baby to push their Satanic agendas.
Roman Polanski's adaptation of Ira Levin's novel was a critical and box-office success. William Castle, known for his low-budget horror films acquired the rights, sold them to Paramount and stayed on as executive producer. The film earned two Oscar nominations and one win for Ruth Gordon's supporting role. As well, Mia Farrow's short hairstyle (created by Vidal Sassoon) spurned a fashion trend once the film was released. With very little gore, it is the performances, and Polanski's skillful camera that bring the terror on the screen in this seminal occult classic.
