Night of the living dead (1968)
A brother and sister visit their father's grave when Barbara is attacked by a strange man. Barbara manages to escape to an isolated farmhouse. Though she is in shock, she manages to pull herself together and help Ben, a man who is also seeking refuge, board up the windows from the horde of the undead outside the house. The two later learn that a family of three and a young couple are taking refuge in the cellar. A power struggle breaks out between the father and Ben about whether to remain upstairs or retreat to the safety of the basement. The radio and television inform the group that radiation from a satellite may be the cause of the dead returning to life. They devise a plan to escape but plans go awry and the young couple perish. With more and more undead attacking the house, Ben remains the only survivor by morning.
Made on a budget of $117,000, the film has gone on to be one of the most successful independent horror films ever made. The original title was Night of the Flesh Eaters. Meant to be a critique of the breakdown of the family unit, Romero contends that the racial issue was never intentional. The main actor Duane Jones was played by a black man and was cast simply because he was the best choice for the role.
