Larry Cohen (1941- )
Born: July 15, 1941. Kingston, New York
Worked for NBC in the 1950's, producing and writing shows such as The Fugitive, The Defenders, The Invaders, and Columbo.
His first horror film was It's Alive (1974). The film became a hit earning $7 million spawning two sequels It Lives Again (1978) and It's Alive III: Island of the Alive (1987). Throughout the 1980's Cohen would direct a series of B-movie horror films, many of which would star B-Movie regular, Michael Moriarty. Q (1982) a film about a winged serpent reeking havoc on New York City was followed by The Stuff (1985) a film about a mysterious yet addictive yogurt/ice cream product that makes whoever eat it turn into gluttonous zombies. Cohen also directed the sequel A Return to Salem's Lot (1987) and wrote the script for Maniac Cop (1988), which would evolve into a trilogy.
In the 1990's Cohen strayed away from directing horror films after The Ambulance (1990), spending much of his time writing for various projects including The Body Snatcher remake and television shows like NYPD Blue. Like many of his fellow directors, Cohen directed an episode of the Masters of Horror television series, which featured a story of a female hitchhiker who is picked up by serial killers (once again starring Moriarty). Cohen has not directed since a project since. His recent work includes the penning the thrillers Phone Booth (2002), Cellular (2004), and Captivity (2007).
