Halloween (1978)
Six year old Michael Myers is sent to a mental institution after murdering his sister on Halloween night in 1963. Fifteen years later, he escapes returns to Haddonfield and stalks teenager Laurie Strode (played by Jamie Lee Curtis) and her friends on Halloween night. Michael's psychiatrist Dr. Sam Loomis, who has grasped the depths of Michael's madness and has been working to keep him institutionalized for life, follows him to Haddonfield to try to prevent him from taking more innocent lives.
Halloween became one of the most profitable independent films. The film spawned a total of seven sequels and two remakes (directed by Rob Zombie) and has been credited with starting many of the horror films conventions and tropes (ie, the final girl), but surprisingly has little violence and gore. Halloween was filmed over 20 days in South Pasadena, California. It has been noted that there are several "nods" to Hitchcock's Psycho in Halloween, including casting Janet Leigh's daughter Jamie Lee Curtis in the starring role and Michael's psychiatrist is named after Marion's lover in the film, Sam Loomis.
Director: John Carpenter
Writer: John Carpenter and Debra Hill
Cast: Jamie Lee Curtis, Donald Pleasence
Running time: 91 minutes
Year: 1978
