diary of the dead (2009)
Jason Creed is an aspiring filmmaker who sets out to make a horror movie with his friends. When the crew hears a news report about the dead coming back to life, they decide to head to Philadelphia to meet up with family members. Jason decides to document the voyage as he believes these mysterious events will become part of history. The group encounters the undead at various stages of the journey including hospitals, their families and each other. Jason manages to upload his footage online, sharing his images with the world. Unfortunately there is little the online community can do other than watch. Soon enough, the group begins to turn into zombies while the video camera records their transformation into the undead.
While this is Romero's fifth zombie movie, it is not considered a sequel or a remake, but as the director describes as a "rejigging" of the zombie concept. While this will not be Romero's last zombie film (he released Survival of the Dead in 2009), this is the first time Romero explored the digital age as a key component in the narrative. The use of texts, webcams, uploading video and the internet played an important role in the connectivity of the characters with each other and the outside world. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, 2007 with wide release on February 8, 2008.
