An accomplished filmmaker, Del Toro is a self taught filmmaker, having made short films in various formats from an early age. A fan of Bava, Romero and Hitchcock, Del Toro learned about special effects makeup from Dick Smith who worked on The Exorcist. His films range from horror/fantasy to Hollywood action. Recurrent motifs in his films include religious iconography, the underworld and clockworks. One of Time magazine's 50 Young Leaders for the New Millennium. Del Toro co-founded the Guadalajara International Film Festival.
Del Toro's feature directorial debut, Cronos (1993) won the critics' prize at the Cannes Film Festival. He followed that with Mimic (1997), The Devil's Backbone (2001) and Pan's Labyrinth. Del Toro received an Oscar nomination and the Golden Palm nomination for Best Original Screenplay for Pan's Labyrinth. His production company is called the Tequila Gang.
