Dawn of the dead (1978)
Four survivors escape the chaos that surrounds them during a zombie apocalypse and seek refuge in a deserted shopping mall. With all the comforts of home at their fingertips they are contented for awhile with their shelter. They soon become disillusioned with their temporary home and are planning their next move when a biker gang invades the mall, bringing with them the zombies that have slowly amassing outside.
Romero's film is widely read as a critique of consumerism and was the director's intention. The film was released as Zombi internationally, which lead to the assumption that people thought Fulci's Zombi 2 was a follow up to this film. The film did have an Italian connection however. Romero was having trouble securing financing for the project and horror director Dario Argento came on board to help. Special effects/makeup artist Tom Savini honed his craft on Dawn of the Dead. The film was released to commercial and critical success. In 2004 Zack Snyder remade the film.
